Henry F. Shovic, PhD

Federal experience: 30 years Federal resource agency experience: 12 years in Yellowstone N. P. as a soil scientist, geographer, and manager of information services (40 employees). Projects in Grand Teton N. P., Great Smoky Mountain N. P., Death Valley N. M., and Denali N. P; Support services for the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee; U. S. Forest Service as soil scientist and geographer.
Soil and Landscape Inventory: completed 3.5 million acres of Park Service and Forest Service soil/landscape surveys, and a 2.2 million acre geologic inventory. Helped develop the TEUI toolkit for rapid inventory support.
Projects: ran a GIS consulting organization for six years; have an LLC; DUNS government
contractor; Level 2 Law enforcement training and experience; 30 years project work in soil quality monitoring, minerals, soils, forestry, fuels, law enforcement investigations, cultural resources, visuals, recreation, septic systems, hydrothermal soils, invasive plant modeling, database development, and data migration; extensive query development and Visual Basic programming experience.
International projects: (three months in China, two trips to Afghanistan in 2005 capacity building in mountain pistachios, disaster GIS support in Washington DC (Mt. Pinatubo, avian flu, Sudan), GIS support in Tanzania; remote sensing-based irrigation planning and watershed condition assessment in Afghanistan in 2007.
Communications: published commercial book author, experienced public speaker; 45 publications; have given 350 seminars on workplace violence prevention.
GIS: ARCGIS advanced, professional-quality map production, GPS, mobile computers,
raster and vector analysis, routing, spatial analysis, image analysis, perspective (3D) visualization, flythrough movies; graphics with Corel Draw and Adobe Photoshop; computer maintenance, installation, repair; database, web page development.
Wildfire experience: Incident Commander or team leader on 19 burned area emergency stabilization (BAER) teams around the country; wildfire effects: familiar with ICS (incident command system); mapping of burned areas on 25 incidents.
Science: PhD in soil science/geography: field investigations: have developed statistical survey
methods; and efficient, model-based systems of landscape/soils inventory; Certified Professional
Soil Scientist 25 years; Faculty affiliate at Montana State University for 10 years.
